Former XPDC frontman Mael dies
He died at 9pm at Muar Hospital, says band manager Bro Yazid.
PETALING JAYA: Former XPDC frontman Syed Ismail Syed Ibrahim, better known as Mael, died at Muar Hospital at 9pm tonight. He was 56.
The band’s manager, known only as Bro Yazid, announced his passing on a Facebook post at around 10pm.
“XPDC vocalist Syed Ismail bin Syed Ibrahim (Mael) has breathed his last at Muar Hospital at 9pm earlier tonight,” said Yazid’s post.
The post had received 346 comments, 775 reactions and 768 shares as of 11.50pm, with many fans praying for Ismail and his family, expressing their condolences.
Harian Metro reported that another bandmate, Azuar Tasi, said Ismail had been having breathing difficulties lately.
According to Astro Awani, Ismail will be buried at the Bakri Islamic cemetery at Batu 6, Muar, tomorrow.
Originally known as Tragedy, the band was renamed XPDC in 1989 by songwriter Zul Adnan Razali, popularly known as JS Kevin.
They produced several hits, such as C.I.N.T.A, Nafisa and Hentian Ini. They were among the most popular rock bands in Malaysia in the 1990s.
The band won several awards, including some of the country’s highest accolades. They won the Anugerah Industri Musik’s (AIM) Top 5 best rock album six times and their song C.I.N.T.A., entered the finals in the Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL) 1990.
