Govt agrees to enact Freedom of Information Act
PETALING JAYA: The government has agreed in principle to enact a Freedom of Information Act, says the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
In a statement, the PMO said the Act will involve clear parameters and guidelines to grant members of the public access to obtain information from the government and other public agencies or companies.
It added that with this move, the government intended to improve the delivery of public services and encourage the people’s involvement in the policy-making process.
“In line with this decision, the Official Secrets Act (OSA) will also be amended accordingly,” it said.
The PMO said the government had also agreed to formulate a Procurement Bill to strengthen legal governance and ensure accountability in all of Putrajaya’s procurements.
It said the principle of transparency will be taken into account in the bill through the creation of a mechanism for complaints and objections, adding that this was in line with global standards.
It added that this decision was made by the special Cabinet committee on national governance, previously known as the special Cabinet committee on anti-corruption.
In a Facebook post, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said his government will continue to take steps to ensure good governance to support the nation’s development.
