Domestic trade and consumer affairs minister’s post still vacant, says Anwar
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says the domestic trade and consumer affairs minister’s position, which became vacant following the death of Salahuddin Ayub in July, is still vacant.
Sabah and Sarawak affairs minister Armizan Ali is currently overseeing the portfolio.
“God willing, we will fill the vacancy. If there are any suggestions, please submit them to me as soon as possible,” he told reporters here.
Anwar was coy when asked if Suhaizan Kaiat would fill the position. Suhaizan won the Pulai parliamentary seat which Salahuddin had held prior to his death.
“Write me a letter,” said Anwar.
Anwar was speaking to reporters after Friday prayers at Nasyrul Quran, the world’s second-largest Quran production centre.
Meanwhile, Anwar did not rule out the possibility of providing an explanation in Parliament about the conditional discharge granted to deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on his 47 graft charges.
“Perhaps, God willing,” he said briefly.
Zahid was granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) on all 47 of his corruption, criminal breach of trust and money laundering charges on Sept 4.
The Umno president had been accused of embezzling millions of ringgit from his foundation, Yayasan Akalbudi, and accepting bribes for various projects during his tenure as the home minister between 2013 and 2018.
Previously, Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim suggested that Anwar provide an explanation to the Dewan Rakyat regarding allegations of interference in Zahid’s DNAA case.
Anwar had previously stressed that he did not interfere in the case, insisting that the matter was under the attorney-general’s purview.
