Annuar Musa applies to join PAS
The former Ketereh MP says he will also bring along 1,000 Umno members to join the Islamic party.
PETALING JAYA: Former Umno veteran Annuar Musa has confirmed that he submitted his application to join PAS last month.
The former communications and multimedia minister said he made the decision to join the Islamic party while he was performing his pilgrimage in Mecca.
“I can confirm that I have submitted my application, but it is up to PAS to accept or reject it. I am a nobody and I’ve been sacked by Umno.
“I want to clarify that it’s not just me and 10 other former Umno leaders who are joining PAS. I will also bring along 1,000 Umno members to join PAS,” Annuar told reporters at a Muafakat Nasional (MN) open house. However, he did not disclose the names of the 10 former Umno leaders.
Last Thursday, Perikatan Nasional (PN) deputy secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said Annuar and at least 10 other former Umno leaders were expected to join PAS soon.
Takiyuddin, who is also PAS secretary-general, said PN would consider fielding the former Umno leaders in the upcoming state elections.
Annuar was among those who were expelled or suspended from Umno for breaching party rules after last year’s general election, along with former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin and Arau MP Shahidan Kassim.
“I chose PAS without any hesitation or doubt, without being influenced by anyone. I haven’t met any PAS leaders yet, and I submitted my application when I was in the holy land of Mecca,” said Annuar.
The former Ketereh MP said he could not return to Umno because it had “completely deteriorated” and strayed from its path.
“The only available option for me is PAS, which has the support of a majority of Malaysians,” he said, referring to the “green wave” which swept the nation in the last general election (GE15), with PAS winning the most number of seats of any individual party.
Commenting on Takiyuddin’s statement that he might be fielded as a candidate in the upcoming state elections, Annuar said he would leave all decisions to the PAS leadership.
“My goal in joining the party is not to become a candidate. However, if the party chooses me, then I will accept it.”
