Netflix to charge RM13 a month for viewers living outside subscribers’ households
In an apparent crackdown on the widespread sharing of password, the company says a Netflix account is only to be used by one household.
PETALING JAYA: Netflix will start charging users who do not live in the account holder’s household RM13 a month to subscribe to the video streaming service.
In a statement today, the company stressed that a Netflix account is “for use by one household”.
It said it will start sending out emails to subscribers in Malaysia who are sharing their Netflix account with those not living in the same household.
In a copy of the email shared in the statement, Netflix said subscribers who want to share their Netflix account with those in other households may transfer their profile to them. They will then become new subscribers and will then have to pay a monthly subscription fee.
“You can also share your Netflix account with someone who isn’t staying in your household for RM13/month,” it added.
Netflix, which is looking to crack down on the widespread sharing of Netflix accounts, said on Tuesday it will limit US viewership of its programming to people living in the same household.
A CBS News report stated that those who subscribe to Netflix’s standard or premium plans, which cost US$15.50 to US$20 per month, will be able to allow another person living outside their household to use their password for an additional US$8 per month.
