Sultan Nazrin calls for fresh approach to river management
KUALA LUMPUR: Sultan Nazrin Shah has called for a coordinated approach to address shortcomings in the country’s river management.
The Perak ruler said that despite the various river management strategies and projects that have been implemented, a large part of the local community is uninformed or just not concerned about such issues.
He said Malaysia should draw inspiration from nations that have successfully saved their rivers and fostered tailor-made policies and approaches to the unique challenges they face.
“Preserving our rivers consists of cultural and geopolitical elements that cannot be effectively addressed through a rigid and segmented framework,” he said in his keynote address during the launch of the ‘Tafsir Mawdu’i Sungai’ book by Zulkifli Yusoff and Zaini Ujang.
“River preservation includes far-reaching work to improve and enhance the quality of river water, guaranteeing its cleanliness and ease of use.”
Sultan Nazrin also said that the responsibility for safeguarding the country’s rivers extends to all stakeholders and is not limited to any specific agency or NGO.
“Hence, it should be our utmost concern to conserve rivers, which serve as the earth’s lifeblood.”
In June, the natural resources, environment and climate change ministry said 29 rivers in Malaysia, or roughly 4% of the country’s 672 rivers, were found to be polluted as of last year.
