Prominent lawyer Sulaiman Abdullah dies
PETALING JAYA: Lawyer Sulaiman Abdullah, who was involved in several high-profile cases including former prime minister Najib Razak’s corruption case and the Perak constitutional crisis, passed away this evening.
The former president of the Malaysian Bar was 77.
His death was announced by his son, Huzir.
In a short message, Huzir said that despite his father’s many health challenges, particularly in the last decade, “his sharp mind and dry wit remained unaffected”.
“He continued to represent clients and serve on various committees and advisory panels.”
In 2018, Sulaiman was appointed as lead prosecutor in Najib’s SRC International Sdn Bhd trial.
Nine years prior he represented Nizar Jamaluddin, the former Perak menteri besar who was toppled in 2009 after three assemblymen declared they no longer supported the Pakatan Rakyat leadership and threw their support behind Barisan Nasional.
In 1998, Sulaiman was one of Anwar Ibrahim’s lawyers in the PKR president’s abuse of power and sexual misconduct cases.
He had also represented the state in prominent cases, including the Catholic Church’s challenge on the usage of the word “Allah”, Lina Joy’s attempt to remove the word “Islam” from her MyKad, and a constitutional challenge by three transgenders in Negeri Sembilan against a state shariah enactment banning cross-dressing.
Huzir said the funeral rites for his father will take place at Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Aziz, Jalan Templer, Petaling Jaya, at 1.10pm.
He added that he will also organise an online memorial service in a few weeks, which will be open to all.
“Should the legal community also wish to organise a memorial, I would welcome that”.
