‘Rebel Moon’: Zack Snyder’s space opera is a fantasy brought to life
Before director Zack Snyder became a teenager, he had one of the most powerful, defining experiences of his life: he watched “Star Wars” at the cinema.
Blown away by what he saw, the now 57-year-old was inspired to create an exotic universe of his very own. And these were the first steps towards the birth of his science-fiction epic, “Rebel Moon”.
“The germ of this idea probably existed since 1977. After I saw ‘Star Wars’, 11-year-old me said: ‘I could do that’. Perhaps not exactly in those words,” Snyder joked during a virtual press conference for the film attended by Malaysian media earlier this month.
Many of the movies he’d watch over the next decade would contribute to the shape of his film. These influences included Akira Kurosawa’s “Throne of Blood” and “Seven Samurai”, John Boorman’s medieval epic “Excalibur”, and the dark David Lynch thriller “Blue Velvet”.
“I was also influenced by a magazine called ‘Heavy Metal’. It was an adult illustrated fantasy magazine, which I read as a child when I shouldn’t have. It was full of sex and violence and craziness, and I thought, ‘This is the greatest thing ever’!”
Fast forward to last Friday, when the first part of “Rebel Moon” – “A Child of Fire” – premiered on Netflix. True to Snyder’s style, the 135-minute-long instalment is jam-packed with gripping visuals and thrilling action sequences.
“Rebel Moon” is set on Veldt, a peaceful planet inhabited mostly by farmers. Unfortunately, the tranquillity there is shattered after a visit by admiral Atticus Noble (Ed Skrein), a sadistic warrior from the Motherworld, a merciless militaristic empire.
The not-so-noble Noble demands that Veldt supply their armies with food. A deadly disagreement takes place, with Noble giving the population 10 weeks to prepare a near-impossible amount of grain for them, or risk being destroyed.
Brave farmer Gunnar (Michael Huisman) decides to stand up to these oppressors, joining forces with Kora (Sofia Boutella), a warrior whose past is linked to the Motherworld’s history.
Together, they recruit a group of fighters from all over the universe. These include sneaky smuggler Kai (Charlie Hunnam), courageous general Titus (Djimon Hounsou), avenging swordsmaster Nemesis (Doona Bae), and charismatic blacksmith Tarak (Staz Nair), who can bond with beasts.
Despite an elite team on their side, Kora and Gunnar soon discover that taking on a galactic empire is far more difficult than any of them can imagine – especially when they soon discover that danger can strike from the most unexpected places.
Skrein, who has starred in films such as “Deadpool”, told the press conference he had particularly enjoyed filming his villainous character’s dramatic introduction. “We shot it for six days in the Santa Clarita desert. We had snake wranglers to find and clear rattlesnakes that would be 5m from us!
“It was 44°C, and I was wearing knee-high leather boots, a wool suit, and wool hat. Yet somehow, it was the best shooting experience I ever had,” the British actor said.
Algerian actress Boutella, meanwhile, said many of her action stunts incorporated elements of her prominent dance background.
“The one element I did not have, which I was scared about, was holding guns. Because my character Kora is a fighter from a young age, I really didn’t want to make any mistakes there,” she said, explaining that she worked with the stunt team on matters such as how Kora would walk or run with her weapons.
Working on a sci-fi creation of his own has been a creatively fulfilling experience, Snyder shared, while his wife Deborah, a producer on “Rebel Moon”, added that it was “refreshing” to create something on their own after working for over a decade on DC films that had strict canon to follow.
The two have previously worked together on films such as “Man of Steel” and “Justice League”.
“I’m really excited for everyone to go and watch the film,” Snyder concluded enthusiastically. “Eleven-year-old me is very proud of it. Exhausted, but proud!”
‘Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire’ is now streaming on Netflix. Its sequel, ‘Part Two: The Scargiver’ is scheduled to be released on April 19.
