Agong opens Menara Merdeka 118
KUALA LUMPUR: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah says Malaysians should view Menara Merdeka 118 as a symbol of the country’s success in navigating the twists and turns of independence and building a diverse and multicultural nation.
In his speech at the opening ceremony of Menara Merdeka 118 here, Sultan Abdullah also said the new landmark symbolised the people celebrating the diversity of the country as an independent nation.
“From any perspective, this tower reflects how our country has gone through the passage of time, ultimately emerging successful in various fields with a social structure and values of unity according to our mould.
“Therefore, Malaysians should feel proud because Menara Merdeka 118 is evidence of Malaysia’s continuous success,” he said.
Also gracing the event was Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah.
The King also expressed confidence that PNB, as a major national investment institution, would continue its efforts to strengthen the country’s economy.
Menara Merdeka 118 is owned by PNB through its wholly-owned subsidiary, PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn Bhd.
At a height of 678.9 metres with 118 floors, the tower is the second tallest in the world after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which stands at 828 metres.
Sultan Abdullah also welcomed PNB’s efforts to restore the Merdeka Stadium to its original form as in 1957.
“Now, beautifully standing at this historically significant location is a tower at a height of 678.9 metres with a symbolic spire representing the proclamation of independence by the late Tunku Abdul Rahman 67 years ago,” he said.
“This new landmark, proudly standing in front of the revered stadium that witnessed the birth of an independent nation, carries a thousand significant meanings.”
