Anwar wishes Harimau Malaya all the best ahead of Asian Cup opener
PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has wished the national football team all the best ahead of their 2023 Asian Cup Group E opening match against Jordan in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday morning.
Malaysia ended a 42-year wait to qualify on merit for the second oldest continental football tournament in the world after the Copa America.
Ranked world No 130, Malaysia, coached by South Korean Kim Pan Gon, will take on world No 87 Jordan at 1.30am on Tuesday (Malaysian time). They will face Bahrain on Jan 20 and South Korea on Jan 25.
In a Facebook post, Anwar said Harimau Malaya would begin an important mission as they bear the hopes of the entire country with them.
“All Malaysians are hoping you all fight with all your might. Good luck!” he said.
Deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also urged Malaysians to watch the match and show their support for the national team.
A Bernama survey found tweets like “Ayuh Harimau Malaya”, “Malaysia Boleh” and “Ekor Harimau Sejati” by Malaysians and influencers going viral.
Only the top two teams from each group and the four best third-placed teams will advance to the last-16 in Doha.
This is Malaysia’s fourth appearance in the Asian Cup, having qualified on merit for the edition in Iran in 1976 and in Kuwait in 1980 and as joint hosts with Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia in 2007.
Malaysia failed to clear the group stage in their three previous appearances.
