Taib’s wife criticises ‘poor treatment, inconsistent medical advice’ at hospital
PETALING JAYA: Raghad Kurdi Taib, the wife of former Sarawak governor Abdul Taib Mahmud, has criticised the “poor treatment and inconsistent medical advice” at the hospital her husband was warded in at Kuching.
In a statement, Raghad again denied a police report which claimed that she “absconded” Taib from the Normah Medical Specialist Centre despite being advised that he should stay there for proper treatment.
She said the doctor in charge, Dr Tan Sian Kong, cleared Taib’s discharge on Feb 3 when she informed Tan of Taib’s scheduled appointment with a doctor at Cardiac Vascular Sentral Kuala Lumpur (CVSKL).
She said she has filed a police report to deny the claims against her and is prepared to cooperate with the police in any investigation, adding that she will also pursue legal action against the hospital, if necessary.
“Tan approved his discharge and deemed him fit for travel. Tan’s referral letter to CVSKL further substantiates the legitimacy of the discharge and planned admission,” she said.
“The decision to bring Taib home was based on informed consent and his right to opt for his best care.”
Raghad said all the necessary discharge documents according to the hospital’s procedure were signed, and all relevant hospital personnel were aware of Taib’s discharge.
Stressing that claims that she voluntarily removed Taib’s medications by herself without alerting the staff on duty are “completely untrue”, she said her requests for assistance to remove Taib’s medical devices were ignored by hospital staff despite repeated calls for assistance.
“The poor treatment and inconsistent medical advice is a serious issue that needs to be looked into and investigated by the hospital,” she said.
“The false accusations have caused unnecessary stress and confusion.”
Raghad said Taib has 24-hour medical support, which includes staffed nurses and scheduled doctor visits, necessary equipment, and medication for care and recuperation while awaiting admission to CVSKL.
Urging the public to disregard “misleading reports”, she also said Taib’s right to privacy and informed medical decisions should be respected.
“My family will remain steadfast and united in these trying times, and we kindly seek the public’s prayers for my husband’s health and well-being,” she said.
The police report claimed that Raghad removed all medications attached to Taib without informing hospital staff.
The report also claims that Taib was allegedly placed in a wheelchair by Raghad’s assistant and bodyguards before being moved to a vehicle at the hospital’s main entrance.
Sarawak police chief Mancha Ata confirmed receiving a police report regarding the claim, with an investigation being held under Section 336 of the Penal Code for endangerment of life or personal safety.
Taib, 87, had served three terms as Sarawak governor from March 1, 2014, until Jan 26 this year, when Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar succeeded him.
